Soiled Doves in the Window

By Linda de Smet Conlin | Silver Springs, Nevada

Year: 2012
Size: 28" x 28"

I pieced and quilted “Soiled Doves in the Window” for the Nevada Quilt Guild (now disbanded) 2012 President’s Challenge, “Under Western Skies.” The cream floral cotton fabric was required in all entries and it immediately made me think of floral wallpaper in a brothel. Inspiration for this quilted wall hanging (28″ square) was the book by Anne Seagraves, “Soiled Doves, Prostitution in the Early West.” Julia Brulette, the most famous Virginia City madam, operated a lavish brothel in Virginia City in the mid 1800s. I pieced the traditional block, Dove-in-the-Window and quilted the names of historic and current brothels in the Sari fabric (100% polyester). This quilt is a Nevada born quilt, through and through.
