Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of southern France without leaving home in this immersive Quiltfolk Adventure Workshop. Guided by Jenni Smith and Kay Walsh, you’ll explore the rich textile heritage of Provence through a visit to Les Olivades printoworks, celebrated Boutis quilter Hubert Valeri and a vibrant market filled with regional inspiration. Along the way, you’ll learn the centuries-old art of French Boutis—an intricate “stuffed quilting” technique that creates remarkable depth, texture, and reversible designs. Through the creation of the Shining Light quilt, you’ll master techniques including Boutis, reverse appliqué portholes, mitered corners, and corded borders while drawing inspiration from the landscapes that influenced artists such as Cézanne, Matisse, and Van Gogh. Combining travel, culture, history, and hands-on instruction, this workshop offers a memorable creative escape to the heart of Provence.

Jenni and Kay ate the sweet pastries Navette de Marseille while learning Boutis in the studio of Hubert Valeri in Paris, though they do originate from his hometown of Marseille in Provence. Their flavor is infused with orange blossom, and they are created in the shape of a boat (navette) to commemorate the arrival of St. Lazarus and the two “Marys,” Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Martha, who arrived in Provence at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the second of February over 2,000 years ago. They have a nice crunch and are delicious when accompanied by a sweet almond tea. You can use the recipe here if you’d like to make (and enjoy) some in advance of or during the workshop!
You may also enjoy indulging in a glass of wine. Provence is very famous for the production of Rosé, and Jenni and Kay enjoyed a glass or two accompanied by some tasty cheeses, many of which are made from goat’s milk in this part of the country.
