Quilts play an essential role in Sue Monk Kidd's novel, The Invention of Wings. I finished the book just before the first workshop, so it seemed a great cover for my first block. The story follows Sarah Grimke, the white daughter of a wealthy southern plantation owner, and Hetty "Handful" Grimke, enslaved on the Grimke plantation since birth. Handful yearns for freedom and personhood, while Sarah, who becomes an abolitionist, lives to escape the limits imposed on women.
