I tried to represent the Middle Passage - route of slave ships from western Africa to the American colonies. The sails/sharks are raw to depict the horror of the enterprise as are the tears of blood shed by slaves. The yellow fabric was specifically chosen for its animal and plant life; the green for the Colonies is a muddle of trees; no vibrancy for those who were taken from their home.
