Robbin Bobbin is one of four original patterns created to showcase Karen’s “Huckleberry Saltbox” fabric collection. Since the Laugh Yourself Into Stitches logo is a red-winged blackbird, she wanted to incorporate her love of birds into her new line with Riley Blake Designs, especially since the colors naturally lent themselves to the collection’s theme. And since this particular quilt is pieced together using traditional quilt methods—strip piecing, corner triangles, and half-square triangles—it is a great teaching pattern for those who want to learn the basics! Robbin Bobbin is ready to build her nest as she pulls thread from a bobbin to create her fancy home.
 

About Karen Walker

Karen learned how to quilt from her grandmother, cutting squares with scissors and sewing them together on a machine. She was 13 when she made her first quilt. After a long hiatus, she dipped her toes back into quilting when she found a turtle pattern that she wanted to make for her (at the time) 5-year-old son. That is when she discovered the world of rotary cutters, acrylic rulers, mats, etc. Her rekindled love of quilting motivated her to start a quilting group at her church in the late ‘90s. She loved the process of making things with different fabrics and colors—and, even more so, she loved being around others doing the same thing.

At this time, she sent her quilts out to be finished by a longarmer. But when the longarmer shared that she was transitioning out of the profession, she sold her machine to Karen. So, she turned this newfound opportunity into a longarming business while her kids were in college. From there, more doors continued to open, and she followed with genuine curiosity. For instance, shortly after someone asked if she ever wanted to design quilts, a beautiful picture that she took of a quilt made out of scraps (now known as her first pattern Pumpkin Spice) went viral on Pinterest around 2009. She kept making designs, and now she is creating new fabric lines for Riley Blake Designs!
