ABOUT 03 | GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS
If you were to close your eyes and imagine with all your might the most glorious shades of evergreen and gold melding into a stunning cacophony, you’d be hard-pressed to match the magnificent color palette cast by Mother Nature throughout the foothills and summits of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Home of the largest old growth forest east of the Mississippi, this subrange of the Appalachian Mountains owes much of its splendor to the diversity of its trees, including sprawling stands of spruce fir at higher elevations and a smattering of species below, like yellow buckeye, black birch, and dogwood.
At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America. Perched atop Clingmans Dome is an iconic observation tower. Constructed in 1959, the 45-foot tower is unmistakably modern with a long, sweeping approach to its circular deck, which provides unobstructed panoramic views of the ever-changing landscape in the 800-square-mile park.
Clingmans Dome Tower itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in part for its prominent departure from the long-standing rustic “parkitecture” and its significant impact on the architectural future of the National Park Service.
In the third installment of our beloved Quilted American Landscapes series, artist Garth Glazier has perfectly captured the colorful essence of this remarkable place on earth. Blending geometric quilt motifs with rich shades of earth and sky, he illustrates the complementary convergence of man-made modernism and God-given grandiosity in this mountainous landscape.
