Block 7 – To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, (a female author); cover design by an unknown artist. Of all the covers for this book, I chose this one for a couple of reasons. First, it is beautiful .. second, the graphic symbolism of the broken limbs and falling leaves, along with the stark 4 color design, dramatically depicts the crashing loss of innocence experienced by the 3 children in the story as the events of one summer unfold in their hometown.
I cropped the cover illustration down to one element and used cotton lawn on a backing of black Kona cotton for my rendition of this cover. The limbs are turned edge reverse applique, the tree canopy and the bird are machine stitched raw edge applique, and the 3 falling leaves, which are symbolic of the 3 children falling out of the innocence of their childhood, are turned edge applique, also machine stitched. The book’s title is represented by the passage in the book that the title is taken from, cut & pasted from my kindle and then printed on cotton poplin.
