Par Terre Garden – Looking Up When I first saw the Par Terre Garden block, I immediately recognized the influence of a formal French garden. The intersecting bands reminded me of carefully planned pathways dividing symmetrical planting beds into elegant geometric sections. But as I began choosing fabrics and watching the block come together, something unexpected happened. My vision shifted from earth to sky. Instead of looking down on a garden from above, I imagined lying beneath it, gazing upward into a celestial garden. The rich purples became the vastness of deep space, filled with swirling galaxies and distant nebulae. The large violet circle transformed into a glowing planet or moon, sprinkled with tiny stars that seem to twinkle against the darkness. The vivid lime-green striped bands became beams of light, cosmic pathways, or perhaps the brilliant trails left by comets crossing the heavens. The beauty of this block lies in its ability to tell two stories at once. It honors the precise balance and symmetry of a traditional parterre garden while inviting the imagination to wander into the mysteries of the universe. Gardens and galaxies both reflect order, rhythm, repetition, and harmony. Whether created by human hands or by the forces of nature, each inspires wonder through its patterns and design. This block reminds me that quilting is more than assembling fabric. Every choice of color and print changes the story being told. What might appear to someone else as flowers and pathways became, for me, a garden among the stars. It is a reminder that creativity often grows in unexpected directions and that every quilt reflects the unique perspective of its maker. As viewers study this block, I hope they pause long enough to decide what they see. Is it an elegant garden viewed from above, or a breathtaking universe viewed from below? Perhaps it is both—a place where imagination blossoms and the stars become flowers in an endless celestial garden.
